What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition often manifesting during childhood. ADHD is often characterised as chronic and debilitating inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Everyone has trouble focusing and maintaining their energy levels from time to time. However, children and adults with ADHD do not just ‘grow out’ of these behaviours. These symptoms can create difficulties in each facet of life if left untreated.
Types of ADHD
ADHD, predominately inattentive type: is often characterised by difficulties with sustaining attention. For example, this may present as challenges with maintaining and regulating attention, focus, following through on tasks, forgetfulness and distractibility.
ADHD, predominately hyperactive/impulsive type: individuals with this type often display the more noticeable features of ADHD. For example, this may manifest as fidgeting, physical restlessness, talking excessively and interrupting others.
ADHD, combined type: individuals with this type of ADHD display features from both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive behaviours.
Does this sound like you or a loved one?
It is very normal and acceptable to struggle with these traits from time to time. If these traits have been ongoing and are causing a significant impact on daily living, there might be something more to it than just a moment of forgetfulness or impulsivity.

FAQ
-
The assessment will involve gathering relevant background information, such as your childhood, academic, social and emotional functioning and history. The comprehensive evaluation is necessary to inform diagnosis and rule out other causes and co-morbid conditions. Additionally, online questionnaires will be sent to all relevant parties involved.
-
The ADHD assessment involves three sessions: the initial intake/background info session (1 hour), the diagnostic ADHD assessment (2 hours) and the feedback session (30 minutes).
-
While a psychologist can assess and diagnose ADHD, medication must be prescribed by either a psychiatrist or paediatrician.
-
A comprehensive report will include in-dept information about your relevant background information, each assessment used, a summary and holistic recommendations tailored to the individual. This report is most suitable for those who intend on gathering evidence for services, including NDIS and DSP.
A streamlined report will be condensed to the essential information, including a summary of results and general recommendations. This is more suitable as a lower cost alternative and will be sufficient e.g., to introduce school and/or workplace adjustments.

Unfortunately, there is no rebate for adult assessments.
Any person under the age of 25 who is suspected to have a complex neurodevelopmental condition may be eligible for rebates. This can be referred via a psychiatrist of paediatrician.
